The Burnley May Day Festival is held every year on the May Day bank holiday Monday. It has run every year since the bank holiday was established in 1978 and is held at Towneley Park. It is preceeded by a May Day parade that currently sets off from Burnley Town Hall although various other start points have been used over the years. The parade sets off at 12 noon, assemble from 11:30am on the town hall car park.
The event at Towneley runs from 11am when the fun fair opens until around 4pm with the speakers at 1pm after the parade has arrived.
The event is organised by Burnley Trades Council’s May Day committee.Next year’s event will be held on Monday 7th May 2018.
In 2016 our main speaker was Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party, and it was a massive event with 1,000-1,500 crowding the stage to hear him. Last year we had shadow Brexit minister, Sir Kier Starmer and next year we are very hopeful of having John McDonnell, shadow chancellor. He accepted a verbal invite and we are just in the process of confirming things.
Planning for the festival is well under way and we would welcome more helpers on to the May Day committee. If you are interesting in helping us plan the event contact Peter or come to one of our meetings (see meetings page).
2018 advertising rates for the brochure are as follows:
